Atomic Data Needs for Modeling Photoionized Plasmas

Many of the fundamental questions in astrophysics can be addressed using spectroscopic observations of photoionized cosmic plasmas. However, the reliability of the inferred astrophysics depends on the accuracy of the underlying atomic data used to interpret the collected spectra. In this paper, we review some of the most glaring atomic data needs for better understanding photoionized plasmas.

The Ionized Stellar Wind in Vela X-1 during Eclipse

We present a first analysis of a high resolution X-ray spectrum of the ionized stellar wind of Vela X-1 during eclipse. The data were obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum is resolved into emission lines with fluxes between 0.02 and 1.04×10−4 photons cm−2s−1. We identify lines from a variety of charge states, includin...

Measurements of Population Inversion and Gain in Carbon Fiber Plasmas ; Theoretical Calculations of Radiative Cooling

We have observed an axial enhancement of the CVI 182 1 (3-2) transition which was correlated with the appearance of a population inversion between levels 3 and 2 in an experiment in which a 0.5kJ C02 laser was focused onto the end of an axially oriented thick (35-350~) carbon fiber. A maximum gain of k % 6 cm-1 was measured for a carbon fiber coated with a thin layer of aluminum (for additional...

Charge Transfer Between Neutral Atoms and Highly Ionized Species: Implications for ISO Observations

We estimate rate coefficients for charge transfer between neutral hydrogen and helium and moderate to highly ionized heavy elements. Although charge transfer does not have much influence on hot collisionally ionized plasmas, its effects on photoionized plasmas can be profound. We present several photoionization models which illustrate the significant effect of charge transfer on the far infrare...

Kolmogorov Dissipation scales in Weakly Ionized Plasmas

In a weakly ionized plasma, the evolution of the magnetic field is described by a “generalized Ohm’s law” that includes the Hall effect and the ambipolar diffusion terms. These terms introduce additional spatial and time scales which play a decisive role in the cascading and the dissipation mechanisms in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. We determine the Kolmogorov dissipation scales for the visc...
